Key facts and figures regarding long-term advisories affecting drinking water systems on reserve

The Government of Canada committed in 2015 to ending all long-term drinking water advisories – those lasting a year or longer – on public drinking water systems receiving financial support from what was then Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).

This line graph depicts the number of long-term drinking water advisories in effect between November 2015 and December 2017 and projected numbers of long-term drinking water advisories expected to be in effect in January and June of each calendar year from 2018 through 2021.

  • In November 2015 there were 105 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems.
  • As of January 23, 2018, 91 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC were in effect.
  • By June 2018 it is projected there will be 72 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.
  • In January 2019 it is projected there will be 65 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.
  • In June 2019 it is projected there will be 60 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.

On January 23, 2018, Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott announced the Government of Canada is taking further steps to end long-term drinking water advisories affecting public water systems on reserve. Working with First Nation communities, the Government of Canada will work to ensure 91 long-term drinking water advisories are lifted by March 2021.
