Ending long-term drinking water advisories in First Nation communities

Everyone in Canada should have access to safe, clean drinking water. The Government of Canada is working with First Nation communities to:

On January 23, 2018, Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott announced close to 250 additional drinking water systems would be included in its commitment to clean drinking water on reserve.

Lac La Croix First Nation, Ontario as of February 6, 2018

This drinking water advisory has been in place for a period exceeding 12 months. ISC is working with the First Nation on an action plan to restore safe drinking water to the community. Lifting the advisory is projected to take place by spring 2018.

Wauzhushk Onigum, Ontario as of January 26, 2018

This drinking water advisory has been in place for a period exceeding 12 months. The community is currently exploring all interim and long term options to eliminate the long-term drinking water advisory and return access to safe clean drinking water to residents. The final options analysis will determine when this long-term drinking water advisory will be lifted.

This initial progress is the result of First Nations’ work with the Government of Canada and other partners towards a common goal: to end drinking water advisories that last more than one year by March 2021.

This line graph depicts the number of long-term drinking water advisories in effect between November 2015 and January 2018 and projected numbers of long-term drinking water advisories expected to be in effect in January and June of each calendar year from 2018 through 2021.

  • In November 2015 there were 105 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems.
  • As of February 12, 2018, 81 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC were in effect.
  • By June 2018 it is projected there will be 71 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.
  • In January 2019 it is projected there will be 60 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.
  • In June 2019 it is projected there will be 55 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.
  • In January 2020 it is projected there will be 48 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.
  • In June 2020 it is projected there will be 37 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.
  • In March 2021 it is projected there will be 0 long-term drinking water advisories on public systems financially supported by ISC.

Ensuring essential infrastructure

The Government of Canada works with First Nations to address health and safety needs, ensure proper facility operation and maintenance, to prevent short-term advisories from becoming long-term.

Ending a drinking water advisory is often complex, spanning multiple phases. Actions to resolve a water or wastewater issue can include:

The Government of Canada is working with First Nations to end long-term drinking water advisories (LT-DWAs). In the table below, "LT-DWA" refers to long-term drinking water advisories which have been in effect for more than 12 months. ISC provides funding for public water systems that serve five or more household service connections for residences that are occupied year round. ISC also provides funding for public water systems serving public facilities funded through ISC. These water systems are managed and operated by the band, a band-owned utility or qualified third party under contract.
