First Nation Responsibilities

The responsibility for emergency management is placed first on the individual and community. As such, Chief and Council have primary responsibility to ensure emergency management plans are in place and that everyone in the community is aware of the response process during an emergency.

As the scale of the emergency increases, the responsibility shifts to successive levels of government, as the resources and expertise of each are needed to respond to the emergency event.

When your community is dealing with an emergency that has overwhelmed its capacity you should contact Emergency Management British Columbia's (EMBC) 24/7 emergency line at 1-800-663-3456 to report the incident and initiate provincial response activities.

You can also contact AANDC's BC Emergency Management Unit for more information on roles and responsibilities at the following address: bcemu@aadnc-aadnc.gc.ca
