Training and Education

To support the implementation of the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act (Act), training and education will be provided for key officials applying or enforcing this Act, including police officers on reserves.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police:

  • Front-line Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) members will be trained to understand the provisional federal rules as it applies to First Nations Communities. They will also acquire an understanding of related processes and procedures pursuant to the law to address situations that may arise on reserves as a result of relationship breakdown.
  • The RCMP is developing and delivering training on the legislation that will encompass an online course available to all RCMP employees in each province or territory and portable reference material for the use of front-line RCMP members in real-time situations.

Public Safety Canada:

  • Public Safety Canada will facilitate the development of best practices and education resources regarding the legislation to assist officers working in First Nations and municipal police services where a First Nation Policing Program agreement is in place.

Education Materials for Legal Experts

  • Educational materials will be created by independent organizations and made available for legal experts including the provincial judiciary to promote informed judgments under the legislation.
