The Government of Canada is committed to ending long-term drinking water advisories in First Nation communities by March 2021.

  • 69 long-term drinking water advisories remain in effect on public systems financially supported by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) as of September 30, 2017
  • 27 long-term drinking water advisories lifted from public systems financially supported by INAC; 19 long-term advisories have been added.
  • Projects underway will benefit 275 First Nation communities and serve more than 270,000 people.

This initial progress is the result of First Nations' work with the Government of Canada and other partners towards a common goal: to end drinking water advisories that last more than one year by March 2021.

  • In 2015 there were 77 long-term drinking water advisories affecting public systems financially supported by INAC.
  • In 2016 there were 71 long-term drinking water advisories affecting public systems financially supported by INAC.
  • By the end of 2017 it is projected there will be 63 long-term drinking water advisories affecting public systems financially supported by INAC.
  • In 2018 it is projected there will be 35 long-term drinking water advisories affecting public systems financially supported by INAC.
  • In 2019 it is projected there will be 27 long-term drinking water advisories affecting public systems financially supported by INAC.
  • In 2020 it is projected there will be 18 long-term drinking water advisories affecting public systems financially supported by INAC.
  • In 2021 it is projected there will be 0 long-term drinking water advisories affecting public systems financially supported by INAC.
