The Enhanced Service Delivery program supports First Nations by identifying employment needs and assisting in overcoming employment barriers. The goal: connecting youth with jobs. First Nations youth share their experiences in INAC's skills training program and how the program helped prepare them for the workforce.

I really love to cook, and since I've been in the program, I've been inspired to go back to school. I want to try to get into the culinary arts program and work on getting my Red Seal and becoming a Chef! And hopefully sometime in the future, I'll open up my own restaurant.

I would recommend this program because it is a really life changing experience that will benefit a lot of young people on my reserve…because they may have had the same situation I had. I really struggled with depression and alcoholism and before the program. I was not in a good place, and thanks to my case worker and my instructors, I am now looking at life in a more positive way. And I really, really, would encourage others to take it. It's a really good program.

I just started, so I'm still in the process of completing it. My case worker is one of my biggest supporters, she's extremely helpful. She goes out of her way to inform me of all the programs around my community that will help benefit my future.

Before I came into Another Way, I was a very shy, angry, and negative person. And one of my favourite lessons that I've learned so far is called 'The Law of Attraction'… It taught me to try harder, to become a better person, to think more positive, and to treat people how I want to be treated. So now I'm practicing those steps, and I'm taking life one day at a time.

I'm not even done the program yet, and it already changed my life so far. Like when I first wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is have a positive thought. Because everything you put out in the world, you get that back. Like karma. What goes around, comes around and everything. If you put out a good, positive attitude in life, a lot of good things will happen to you.

I was in the Another Way program for three months, and then I graduated and was hired as the receptionist at the Blood Tribe Reinvestment Initiative. Now I want to go back to school and further my education, because the people I work with, they motivate me to want to actually try hard in life. I want to be where they are today.

My case manager referred me to the Another Way program. I found her very supportive and very inspiring. She wanted me to be more self-sufficient, and encouraged me to go to this program to do something with my life.

Before, I felt like I couldn't motivate myself. I felt like I was at like a stand still. I felt like the people who guided me, the facilitators in the program, believed in me. They wanted me to strive for like a better future and really motivated me to want to try harder. I just wanted to be more self-sufficient and not depend on social assistance. And I just wanted to have a more positive outlook on life.

They provided transportation, they provided meals, and so it felt like I just had a little bit of hope. And, that's what really motivated me to go every day.

I recommend this program because it helped me to get where I am today, and if it wasn't for this Another Way program I don't know where I would be. I'd probably still be staying at home, just not doing anything. Just waiting for a cheque.

This program actually motivated me to want to go back to school, and I want to choose a career. I thought – "Why not choose a health career?" I want to learn more about my health, and I just want to take care of myself.

Reducing Reliance on Income Assistance: Katie

I basically was stuck after graduating high school. I did take some college and went through other training, but I had other personal issues that I had to deal with. So the Another Way program helped me to take care of my barriers.

One was suffering from addictions.

Being in the program helped me with my self-identity, who I wanted to be, what I wanted in life and just where I wanted to go. And be more structured. So yeah, that's what the program's done for me.

Where I got the most support was right in the classroom with the facilitators. They helped me eliminate barriers and offered support and different resources within the community that I was not aware of. I received financial supports and guidance, because I don't really have parents and family that I can go to. We also had traditional supports. We did cultural things, like learning Blackfoot. We went on different trips such as to Blackfoot Crossing, and we interacted with elders.

I would tell others to take this program, very much so. It's very good and the people that work with you are amazing. You have the opportunity to excel. Myself, I didn't know what I wanted do. But we got help to find out what we wanted to do career-wise.

We also did job readiness work. At the end of the program I did the 6-month training where I was actually working, more like a practicum. I succeeded fully in that program. I was then given an opportunity to work for 7 months with Blood Tribe Reinvestment Initiative as the receptionist.

Now I have some volunteer projects with little kids in the community. And I wanted to take a step further so I took the liberty of designing and creating my own business. It's called Little Lady's Gardening and Beautification, and it's for community enhancement. I have a partnership with Blood Tribe Reinvestment Initiative. They helped me get to where I'm at.

The business is going great. It's wonderful. We have a hundred trees and rosebushes ready to plant and go out. I'm so excited, and I'm very happy to be here. My business is doing very well. It's growing rapidly each day.
