MIAWPUKEK FIRST NATION, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR (July 6, 2012) –Senator Fabian Manning (Newfoundland and Labrador), on behalf of the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today joined Chief Mi’sel Joe, Miawpukek First Nation, for the official opening of the Reuben Lewis Memorial Bridge.

“The Harper Government is committed to building stronger First Nation communities and substantially improving the health and safety of residents,” said Senator Manning. “By investing in infrastructure, we are doing just that. The construction of the new bridge is key to the community as it replaces an older bridge that was damaged by flooding and improves access to a major road within the community.”

“Our Government continues to fulfil its commitment to invest in critical infrastructure in communities across Canada, to help move people, and get goods to market,” said Minister Duncan. “Investments in public infrastructure, like the bridge over the Southeast Brook, will help connect communities as well as create and sustain jobs.”

“I would like to thank the Government of Canada for its contribution to the continuous well-being of our community,” said Chief Mi’sel Joe. “This new bridge will not only improve our day-to-day lives, it will stimulate our local economy by creating new jobs and making our community more sustainable.”

Miawpukek First Nation was established as a reserve in 1987 and is located on the Island of Newfoundland. The community has 2,877 members, with an on-reserve population of approximately 849 members.
