Budget 2012

On March 29th, Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty tabled Budget 2012. Aboriginal people will benefit from the measures in Budget 2012 that support jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. Visit the Budget website  . For highlights on Aboriginal and Northern investments, visit the AANDC website.

Economic Development and Job Creation

Claims

Minister Duncan and the Long Plain First Nation Celebrate the Signing of Specific Claim Settlement Agreement

On March 19th, Canada and the Long Plain First Nation announced the final settlement of an outstanding specific claim. Under the settlement, Canada will provide the First Nation with $21.3 million to resolve the claim. The settlement is for financial compensation only and does not have a land component. Education and Schools

Attawapiskat First Nation to build new school

On March 6th, Minister Duncan announced that the Attawapiskat First Nation awarded the construction contract to build its new school to Penn-Co Construction Canada (2003) Ltd. of Blumenort, Manitoba. The new school is expected to open during the 2013-2014 school year. When completed, the 5,808-square-metre new school will accommodate 540 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
