Title: Co-managing natural resources with First Nations: Guidelines to reaching agreements and making them work
Date: 1996
Author(s): Saskatchewan Indian Federated College
Abstract: As the process of co-managing resources is used more and more often, the paper offers best practices designed to help First Nations and federal negotiators reach co-management agreements successfully. The report can be divided in four main parts. The first part, "Phases of Co-Management Agreements", walks through all the steps of co-management agreements. The second part, "Community Involvement Strategies", outlines strategies for full community participation in the co-management process. Finally, the third and fourth sections, "Preparing for Negotiations: What to Expect" and "Hints and Guidelines Towards a Negotiating Strategy", give useful tips about pre-negotiation preparation, and about the negotiation strategy itself.
