Ottawa, Ontario (June 21, 2011) - The following statement was released by the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, on the occasion of National Aboriginal Day:
“On June 21st, Canadians will come together to join in National Aboriginal Day festivities and to experience the wealth of Aboriginal cultures and traditions that are found from coast to coast to coast.
This day is part of the Celebrate Canada! festivities and coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and a time of cultural significance and celebration for Aboriginal people.
Canadians can discover the myriad of Aboriginal communities through cultural events and displays of rich heritage.
I encourage all Canadians to take part in this celebration, and to take this opportunity to recognize and strengthen present-day partnerships. It is my hope that these partnerships will continue to flourish.
National Aboriginal Day is a day for all Canadians – Share in the celebration!”
