What is the Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document?
The Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document is issued by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development under a new integrated registration process to all newly registered Indians under the Indian Act.
This time-limited document is printed on Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) letterhead with a red Canada logo and the Registrar's seal and may be used as proof of registration pending issuance of the individual's Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) or Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) (commonly referred to as a ‘Status Card').
Notice to all Service Providers
The Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document is printed on INAC letterhead. It is valid for a period of up to one year from the date of registration, by which time the registered Indian should have received his/her SCIS or CIS. It confirms that the individual is registered as an Indian under the Indian Act and that the individual has access to the benefits and/or services conferred to registered Indians.
Please note that the Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document, once signed by the Indian Registrar and stamped with the Registrar's seal, is an official document. The document includes a raised seal of the Indian Registrar on the bottom right side of the document as an authenticity feature. Service providers may confirm an individual's identity by asking him/her to provide another piece of photo identification. The Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document is null and void if it is photocopied and/or altered in any way.
