Fact Sheet – Indian Registration – Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document

The Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document is an official document issued by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to a newly registered individual.The document confirms that the individual named therein is registered as an Indian under the Indian Act and has access to the benefits and/or services conferred to registered Indians.

Individuals who receive this letter should carry with them at all times the Information Sheet on the Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document.

USES:

1. By Registered Indians:  This document may be used as proof of an individual’s registration, pending issuance of the individual’s Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) or Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) (commonly referred to as a ‘Status Card’).

2. By Service Providers:  This document may be used by service providers in the provision of benefits and/or services conferred exclusively to registered Indians.  Service providers may confirm the individual’s identity by asking the individual to provide another piece of photo identification.

FEATURES:

1.  Letterhead:  This document is printed on Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) letterhead with a red Canada logo.

2.  Seal:  A raised seal of the Indian Registrar is included on the right side of the bottom of the document.

3.  “Valid Until” Date:  The document states a “valid until” date, after which it should no longer be used by either the individual or the service provider.

NULL & VOID:  The Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document is null and void if it is photocopied and/or altered in any way.  Photocopied and/or altered documents should not be used by either the individual or the service provider.
