Q What is the Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP)?
A The Northern Scientific Training Program is a supplementary granting program to offset the additional costs of northern research.
Q What is the purpose of the NSTP?
A To stimulate interest in northern studies, and provide opportunities for senior undergraduate and graduate students to obtain experience and professional training in the North.
Q Who is eligible for the NSTP?
A Students (Canadian citizens or permanent residents) enrolled in a degree Program at a recognised Canadian university. Post-doctoral studies are not supported.
Q What fields of research are supported NSTP?
A Training funds support projects on northern topics from ALL disciplines (health, human/social, life and physical sciences) and in multi-disciplinary fields.
Q How can I use my NSTP fund?
A Program funds are intended to assist in defraying the additional costs attributable to northern research projects (transportation costs, living expenses, freight costs and some interpreter/translator fees). Funds cannot be used to cover translation, licencing costs or to pay for fees or living expenses in southern Canada.
Q Can I apply to more than one university?
A Candidates cannot be allocated NSTP funds through more than one university in a research year.
Q How do I apply for the NSTP?
A Students are required to complete the necessary online forms ensuring that they follow the instructions outlined in the Student's Manual. Once the forms have been completed, they are to be submitted to the universities' Northern Studies Committee. Applications from individuals are not accepted.
Q What is the deadline for applying for NSTP funds?
A The NSTP deadline is December 1st. However students should contact their Northern Studies Committee to find out what the internal deadline is (generally early to mid-November).

Q I am being asked for my ID and Password but I don't have one. How do I obtain one?

Q I forgot my Password. How can I retrieve it?
A You can get your password using this page.
Q How do I change my password?
A Once you are logged in to your account, choose "Change Password" from the right toolbar.
Q The system won't accept my password, what am I doing wrong?
A Your password must be at least 6 characters but no more than 10 characters in length. It may be alpha or numeric characters, but it is case sensitive (i.e., lower or upper case). We recommend that your password consist of both letters and numbers (but not special characters).
Q My supervisor's name is not on the list, what should I do?
A You can chose the option "Not registered/Non enregistré" and advise your supervisor so he/she can create an account.
Q If I filled out an application the previous year, will my information be transferred to my report?
A All the basic information will be transferred to your report but can be changed or updated.
Q Will my supervisor know that I completed a form?
A If your supervisor is registered and you chose him/her from the drop down list, they will receive an email advising them that a form is waiting for their approval.
Q Can my supervisor make changes or updates to my application or report?
A Your supervisor can make changes or updates to your form. You will be notified by e-mail if that is the case.
Q Once my supervisor approves my form, what happens?
A Your committee's chairperson will receive an email advising them that their approval is now needed.
Q Do I have to print the form for signature?
A All forms must be signed before they are submitted by the Committee. Signatures are requested at two levels (student and supervisor) and can be printed by either one.
