Diamond Mining

Diamond mining in the Northwest Territories has resulted in new challenges and opportunities in the fields of environmental assessment and downstream activities. Two reports examine the issues raised by these developments.

• The Independent Review of the BHP Process (1997) is based on in-depth interviews with people involved in the BHP process and examines the regulatory and negotiated processes that led to the final approval of the diamond mine proposed by BHP Diamonds Inc.
• The Value Added Aspects of the Canadian Diamond Industry (1998) is based on committee examinations of trade policy, taxation, access to rough diamonds, training, the role of financial institutions and security.
