Royalties are payments made to land owners to compensate for natural resources that are extracted by outsiders. The amount of the payment is based on the quantity of the resource that was extracted and the income earned. All provinces and territories having significant mining activities impose mining taxes and/or mining royalties on mining operations within their jurisdictions.
The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that Aboriginal Canadians living in the north receive fair royalties as set out in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Mining Regulations.
