The cost of food in the North is significantly higher than in other parts of the country. Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) works with Northern communities to make nutritious perishable foods more affordable and improve the health of Northerners.
On April 1, 2011, the Government of Canada launched a subsidy program, Nutrition North Canada (NNC) , to make nutritious, perishable foods accessible to Canadians living in isolated northern communities. NNC is also funding community based nutrition education activities to increase knowledge of healthy eating and develop skills for selecting and preparing healthy foods.
