Engagement Sessions on the Development of a Proposed Legislative Framework for Drinking Water and Wastewater in First Nation Communities

Engagement Sessions on the Development of a Proposed Legislative Framework for Drinking Water and Wastewater in First Nation CommunitiesAccess to safe, clean drinking water and effective treatment of wastewater is essential for the health and safety of First Nation communities and is a priority of the Government of Canada. That is why the government is moving forward with developing a regulatory regime for water and wastewater for First Nation communities.

As part of the consultation process, 13 engagement sessions were held from February to March 2009 with 544 First Nation individuals across the country. Consultation on a legislation framework was a government commitment identified in the First Nations Water and Wastewater Action Plan. Those not able to attend sessions were invited to submit written comments on the proposed legislative framework.

The Government of Canada is committed to working in partnership with First Nations to develop a regulatory process that will help ensure First Nation communities have access to better water and wastewater services.
