In support of its mandate, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) and First Nations continue to work together to increase First Nation responsibilities for the environment and natural resources on First Nation lands, as well as certainty of title over land and resources.
Currently there are 2.7 million hectares of reserve land across Canada. First Nations land base continues to increase as land claims are settled and implemented and land is added through the Additions to Reserve process.
The Government of Canada is committed to addressing historical injustices, in part by increasing title to and control over land. As a result, strong partnerships among Aboriginal people, governments and the private sector are emerging. These bring opportunities for economic growth and a more promising future for Aboriginal people and for all Canadians.
