Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) has a responsibility to help protect the health and safety of First Nations people, in part through programs to protect the environment on reserve lands.

These responsibilities are undertaken in partnership with First Nations, and are guided by AANDC's Environmental Stewardship Strategy and its approach to sustainable development. AANDC also has environmental responsibilities in the North, protecting northern water and cleaning up contaminants
