Inspections

INAC district inspectors are responsible for the inspection of various resource operations in the Northwest Territories.  These inspections help permit/licence holders ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and the terms and conditions in authorizations that are issued by INAC's Land Administration office and the various land and water boards.

What do district inspectors do?

District inspectors support permit/licence holders to meet the terms and conditions of various authorizations, by:

  • Providing information and support to ensure compliance with the applicable acts and regulations
  • Inspecting, monitoring and analyzing data, and conducting investigations to measure compliance
  • Recommending options for compliance
  • Preparing court briefs and evidence in the case of non-compliance
  • Taking other actions deemed necessary to prevent or minimize danger to the environment and the public and to prevent the misuse of natural resources

Where does INAC do inspections?

INAC divides the NWT into two administrative districts and four sub-districts. Where there are settled land claims, the districts are adjusted to correspond with the boundaries of the settlement areas as defined in the appropriate land claim agreement.

The North Mackenzie District includes the Inuvialuit, Gwich'in and the Sahtu Settlement Areas and has district offices in:

  • Inuvik
  • Norman Wells

The South Mackenzie District includes North and South Slave Regions (Including the Tlicho region) and has district offices in:

  • Yellowknife
  • Fort Smith
  • Hay River
  • Fort Simpson
