Regional Land Use Planning

Regional Land Use Plans (LUPs) are community-based tools used to assist decision-makers concerning ecological protection, sustainable communities and responsible economic development within a sound environmental stewardship framework. They also help in the identification and implementation of protected areas through the NWT Protected Areas Strategy   and are the first step in ensuring proposed projects conform with regional land use priorities.

INAC assists and advises the boards that have emerged from land, resource and governance negotiations and the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act   (MVRMA) in developing Regional LUPs. The Environmental Policy and Planning Section of Environment and Conservation coordinates INAC's input to the preparation of LUPs and works closely with the planning boards, counterparts at INAC's headquarters office, and other federal and territorial agencies in the course of plan preparation, approval and implementation.
