Working with the Environment

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) oversees the Canadian Environmental Assessment process to ensure that potentially harmful effects to the environment are taken into account before certain projects (such as road construction, forest development, resource extraction, development leases, etc.) on reserve land are approved by the Minister.

AANDC also works with Environment Canada, the Canadian Wildlife Service, and the provincial government to help First Nations obtain funding for environmental assessments and other projects. It also manages a federal contaminated sites remediation program on reserve lands.

For further information on working with the environment on reserve lands, we invite you to visit the links above or contact Main Reception and ask to speak to an Environmental Specialist in Lands and Economic Development.
