First Nations Infrastructure Fund

Through the First Nations Infrastructure Fund (FNIF), the Federal Government will invest $131 million in First Nation communities across the country. The fund will help improve the quality of life for First Nations by supporting infrastructure and planning projects over five years. Approximately $17 million will be allocated to projects in the BC Region.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), Infrastructure Canada and the Assembly of First Nations announced the Infrastructure Fund in October, 2007. The fund combines a portion of AANDC's Capital Facilities and Maintenance Program, Infrastructure Canada's Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, and the Gas Tax Fund. This single-window approach will help increase efficiency and streamline access to funding.

The program's objectives are to improve health and safety of First Nation communities, contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment, improve the delivery of public services and enhance collaboration between First Nation communities, municipalities, provinces, other federal departments and the private sector.
