Relocation of Mushuau Innu of Davis Inlet to Natuashish

The Mushuau Innu have been involved in all aspects of the relocation project. During initial talks with Government of Canada, the Mushuau Innu appointed Cajetan Rich and Joseph Mark Rich to represent them as Director General and Construction Manager respectively. Several Mushuau Innu have been engaged to work in various fields throughout the duration of project. The tendering requirements ensured that each contractor involved in the project included a component for Innu employment and training. At the peak of construction, approximately 70-80 Innu people were employed along with the other 225 non-Innu workers. These trades included laborers, heavy equipment operators, housekeeping, carpentry, electrician, mechanics and masonry.

Each residence has a full basement that can be finished and made into extra rooms. All homes have a furnace that can use wood or fuel. A number of Mushua Innu women are proudly preparing for the move to Natuashish by sewing curtains for their new homes
The new community includes 8.5 km of main access road and 8 km of townsite network roads. A 4,400-square-metre school complex will accommodate classes from kindergarten to Grade 12... Each complex contains four two or three-bedroom units. This housing complex will serve as residences for the community's teachers. The community of Natuashish also has a 720-square-metre health centre. The new centre will house social and health care services for the community.

The community has a complete water treatment and distribution system. The water treatment consists of a slow sand filtration system and chlorination.

The community 1700 kW capacity plant will be operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. A 3-km, diesel-fuel transfer line will be used to transport the fuel from the wharf to a fuel storage tank farm.
