The First Nations University of Canada, formerly the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, offers university programs in an environment of First Nations cultures and values. Its unique curriculum takes into account the First Nations cultural perspectives, and includes an Elders Program that is an integral part of its student support systems.
With financial support from the federal and provincial governments, the University has provided educational services to Aboriginal students since 1976.
A permanent home for the First Nations University of Canada was built in 2002 at a cost of about $30 million, with a total of $10 million provided by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and Western Economic Diversification Canada (WEDC).
Prior to completion of the building, the University leased classroom and office space from the University of Regina. The First Nations University of Canada is now located on land owned by the Star Blanket First Nation which is in the process of formal reserve creation.
Under the Indian Studies Support Program (ISSP), INAC provides $7.3 million in core funding for the University annually. The Government of Saskatchewan provides the University with $5.2 million in core funding. The INAC Saskatchewan regional office has leased office space at the University through Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) since 2002 for approximately $966,000 annually.
The First Nations University of Canada is an affiliated college with the University of Regina. Although it is registered as a University, it does not have degree-granting authority. Degrees are granted through the University of Regina.
The University offers its programs and services on three campuses: Prince Albert (Northern Campus), Regina, and Saskatoon. There are approximately 900 students currently attending the First Nations University of Canada. The University has a capacity for 2,700 students.
The First Nations University of Canada is an institution under the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and is governed by a Board of Governors, which oversees day-to-day operations. The University has been a member of the Association (AUCC) of University and Colleges of Canada since 1994 and a provisional member since 1984.
