Ottawa, Ontario (February 11, 2010) — The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of Peter Kusugak as a member of the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB). Mr. Kusugak brings industry and regulatory experience in Nunavut's resource management to his new role.
“Mr. Kusugak has made many distinguished contributions to his field over the course of his career,” said Minister Strahl. “We are proud that he will serve as a member of the NWMB and look forward to his future achievements.”
Mr. Kusugak brings to this position nearly 30 years of experience as a federal resource management officer and field operations manager in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
The NWMB is responsible for the well-being of a large population of wildlife. The board has the mandate to protect habitats for this wildlife and to ensure the appropriate use of the wildlife in the Nunavut Settlement Area, a region of 1.9 million square kilometres. It is the main instrument in managing wildlife and in regulating access to wildlife habitats. It operates under the principles of conservation, sustainability and ecosystem integrity.
In order to have strong public institutions, the right individuals with the necessary expertise and skill sets are essential. Governor-in-Council appointments are based on the guiding principles of competency, professionalism and accessibility to all Canadians.
