Statement from Minister Chuck Strahl on the Opening of Meadowbank Gold Mine

Ref. #2-3372

Baker Lake, Nunavut (June 18, 2010) - Senator Dennis Patterson (Nunavut) issued the following statement today on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians:

“I would like to congratulate Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited on the official opening of its Meadowbank Gold Mine. This project exemplifies Nunavut's rich mineral endowment and is the result of a careful assessment and rigorous planning and consultation process. As part of the Northern Strategy , the Government of Canada is committed to promoting a sustainable business climate with a combined focus on environmental stewardship, job growth and economic opportunities for Aboriginal peoples and Northerners.

Major development projects, such as the Meadowbank Gold Mine, have the potential to make substantial contributions to promoting strong and healthy Aboriginal and northern communities. The Government of Canada recognizes that for economic development to be sustainable, it must respect the ecological and social systems upon which northern communities depend. That is why we recently introduced Bill C-25, the Nunavut Planning and Project Assessment Act so we may further improve northern regulatory regimes which will include provisions for enhanced environmental stewardship.

With a workforce that includes more than 35 per cent Inuit and investments in projects such as the Kivalliq Mine Training Society, Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited is an example of a business that is providing tangible economic benefits for both Aboriginal peoples and Northerners.”
