Chief Commissioner Reappointed To The First Nations Tax Commission

Ref. #2-3375

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (June 22, 2010) – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians announced today the reappointment of Mr. C.T. (Manny) Jules as Chief Commissioner of the First Nations Tax Commission (FNTC)  .

The FNTC is one of the four institutions created through the First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Management Act—a First Nation-led initiative—which came into force on April 1, 2006, along with the First Nations Finance Authority (FNFA), the First Nations Financial Management Board (FMB) and the First Nations Statistical Institute (FNSI).

These institutions enhance the tools available to First Nations to support good government, economic growth and, ultimately, the quality of life on reserves, by strengthening First Nation real property tax regimes, creating a First Nation bond financing regime, supporting First Nation financial management and strengthening First Nation statistical capacity. The FNTC is the successor to the Indian Taxation Advisory Board (ITAB). It supports First Nation property tax regimes and ensures they are administratively efficient and harmonized with the rest of the country.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to congratulate Mr. Jules on his reappointment as Chief Commissioner,” said Minister Strahl. “The FNTC plays an important role in strengthening the First Nation tax system and Mr. Jules' experience in this area will continue to greatly benefit First Nation communities.”

Mr. Jules was first appointed Chief Commissioner of the FNTC on November 24, 2006, and has served as Chair of the ITAB from 1989 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2007.
