Canada Shares in an Historic Occasion to Mark a Pivotal Anniversary for Métis People

Ref. #2-3392

Batoche, Saskatchewan (July 18, 2010) - Parliamentary Secretary John Duncan today participated in Back to Batoche Days in Batoche, Saskatchewan. Mr. Duncan attended the day's activities on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians.

Mr. Duncan joined Métis as they marked the 125th anniversary of the battles of Batoche, Fish Creek and Duck Lake in what is formally known as the Northwest Resistance. Mr. Duncan took part in the grand entry and delivered a speech which highlighted the achievements of the Métis. He saluted the dedication and determination of Métis leaders, both past and present, for their work in maintaining a proud Métis history that continues to be celebrated and shared among all Canadians.

"Today, we look to the past to recognize and honour the sacrifices of the Métis, but we must also focus on the future," said Mr. Duncan. "Our government is committed to strengthening and growing relationships that pave the way for all Métis to become full partners in building a strong and prosperous Canada."

Mr. Duncan also untied two sashes to open the Métis Veterans Memorial Garden near the Batoche site in honour of Métis Canadian Forces Veterans and was on hand for the unveiling of a Commemorative Gate to honour the fallen of Batoche.

As part of the Commemorative Gate event, there was a reconciliation ceremony that involved Métis, First Nations and Military units, and the ancestors of those who fought at the battles of Batoche, Duck Lake and Fish Creek. The reconciliation ceremony was to remember past sacrifices, reflect on those memories and build upon them to support a brighter future for all Métis people and all Canadians.

The Government of Canada provided $477,000 for activities at Batoche in 2010.

Last December, Parliamentarians unanimously declared 2010 as the Year of the Métis in recognition of the Métis history, culture and contributions to all aspects of Canadian society.
