Improved Infrastructure for First Nations in Atlantic Region

Ottawa, Ontario (August 27, 2010) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today investments of over $5.9 million over three years, commencing in 2010-2011, to improve First Nation infrastructure initiatives in Atlantic Canada. In all, nine projects ranging from broadband and fibre optic connectivity, to community planning road construction will be completed through the First Nations Infrastructure Fund (FNIF).

“Through programs such as the First Nations Infrastructure Fund, the government is engaging First Nations in meaningful partnerships, fostering sustainable First Nation communities and supporting stronger, safer and healthier communities,” said Minister Duncan. “These projects are concrete examples of the action that is being taken and real progress made to create jobs and improve the quality of life for First Nations within the Atlantic Region.”

The proposal-based FNIF program provides First Nations with the opportunity to access funds under five categories:  connectivity, energy systems, solid waste management, roads and bridges, and planning and skills development. Since 2007, more than $94 million has been committed for 264 infrastructure projects across the country.

“It is great to see programs such as the First Nations Infrastructure Program in action and making a positive difference in these communities,” noted Keith Ashfield, Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. “These investments will make it easier to open doors to economic development partnerships.”

Today's announcement includes the following nine projects for First Nations in the Atlantic Region:

• Mushuau Innu First Nation – partnership to provide broadband internet services for every member of the community.
• Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey – upgrade of existing connectivity lines and connectivity loops allowing native schools, health centres and band offices to share connectivity.
• Lennox Island Band – repair, reconstruction and paving of streets within the community.
• Buctouche Band – development of a Comprehensive Community Plan.
• Indian Island Band – construction and chipseal surfacing of roads.
• Eskasoni Band – wind power planning as well as road construction and upgrades to enable safe access for emergency response vehicles and school buses.
• Elsipogtog First Nation – sidewalk, curbs and storm sewer construction.
• Chapel Island First Nation – road upgrades and paving.
