UAS Program Objectives

The policy aim of the UAS program is to promote self-reliance and increase life choices for Aboriginal people in urban centres. The UAS program objective, directly supports the implementation of OFI's strategic outcome - "improving the socio-economic conditions of Métis, non-status Indians and urban Aboriginal people". The UAS program objectives are as follows:

  • Targeting of urban Aboriginal socio-economic needs within new and renewed federal initiatives, where appropriate;

  • Improving access and coordination of programs and services;

  • Coordination of policy research, knowledge and information sharing in the urban Aboriginal area; and

  • Improving horizontal linkages and policy harmonization within the federal government and seeking opportunities for partnership (i.e. the federal government, provincial, municipal governments, Aboriginal groups and private sector).

In order to accomplish these UAS program objectives the UAS projects will strategically focus investments in three project priority areas:

  • improving life skills;
  • promoting job training, skills and entrepreneurship; and
  • supporting Aboriginal women, children and families.

As a result of achieving the UAS objectives, the Government of Canada's ability to align federal expenditures directed toward urban Aboriginal issues in key urban centres with provincial and municipal programming is maximized.
