The Prime Minister of Canada announced the creation of the Inuit Relations Secretariat in April 2004 at the Canada-Aboriginal People's Roundtable. Through discussions with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (the national Inuit organization) and other Inuit organizations, the role and mandate of the Secretariat were developed. In April 2005 the Inuit Relations Secretariat (IRS) was established.
The Inuit Relations Secretariat has a dual purpose: to serve as the Government of Canada's primary point of contact for collaboration with Inuit organizations, and to be an internal government source for information, advice and expertise on Inuit matters. The IRS does not manage any federal programs with the exception of the Inuit component of the Basic Organizational Capacity of Aboriginal Representative Organization (BOC) funding, formerly administered by Canadian Heritage.
