First Nations have assumed primary responsibility for delivering programs and services to their members. The Indian Government Support Programs were established in the early 1980s to assist Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada in providing support to First Nations governments. The Indian Government Support Programs include five distinct but related programs that contribute to the ongoing costs of their governments and institutions, and toward improving First Nations governance capacity.
The Indian Government Support Programs include: Band Support Funding, Band Employee Benefits, Tribal Council Funding, Band Advisory Services, and Professional and Institutional Development.
