In 2007, the government invested $300 million in addition to the existing federal funding of $272 million annually to improve on-reserve housing in all First Nations communities. At the time, First Nation home ownership was well below the national average. The goal was to improve housing on reserves, increase the housing supply and provide First Nations families and individuals with a means to build equity and generate wealth.
