Vancouver, British Columbia (June 29, 2009) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the new Federal Framework for Aboriginal Economic Development. This announcement includes a $200-million investment over four years to implement the Framework.

“This new Framework represents a fundamental change in Aboriginal economic development,” said Minister Strahl. “It reflects the significant, real and growing opportunities for Aboriginal people to take an unprecedented step toward becoming full participants in the economy – as entrepreneurs, employers and employees.”

The Federal Framework for Aboriginal Economic Development will guide federal actions across many departments and agencies, by pursuing a clear set of strategic priorities:

• Strengthening Aboriginal entrepreneurship
• Developing Aboriginal human capital
• Enhancing the value of Aboriginal assets
• Forging new and effective partnerships
• Focusing the role of the federal government

Minister Strahl was joined for the announcement by Chief Clarence Louie, Chairperson of the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board. 

“The best way to make Aboriginal communities self-reliant is to put more effort and resources into economic development,” said Chief Louie.  “Because of its integrated approach, and a focus on leveraging dollars to invest in our communities, the new Framework will help Aboriginal people to go after more business and partnership opportunities.”

To develop the Framework, the Government held extensive discussions with the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board and other federal departments and agencies, the provinces and territories, Aboriginal groups, and private sector stakeholders.

Today’s announcement fulfills the Budget 2008 commitment to launch a new approach to Aboriginal economic development.
