Statement by the Minister Regarding a Plan to Move Forward on the Appointment of a New Chair and Commissioners for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)

2-3118

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (January 30, 2009) - All parties to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement have now agreed to a plan to select a new Chair and Commissioners for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Discussions led by Justice Frank Iacobucci have been productive and all parties are satisfied with the selection process and are eager to move forward.

A selection committee, chaired by Justice Frank Iacobucci will work closely to find the best candidates in the most efficient manner. It is expected that this process will move forward quickly.

I would like to thank all parties for their dedication and willingness to work together on a sound plan for the appointment of a new Chair and Commissioners.

I commend Justice Frank Iacobucci for succeeding in his role as facilitator and for his commitment to the successful implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The Government of Canada recognizes the important role the TRC plays as part of the settlement agreement and is committed to ensuring rapid selection of the Chair and the two Commissioners so that the TRC can fulfill its mandate in order to move forward for the sake of Residential School survivors.
